A suspected conman who paraded himself as a Deputy Superintendent of
Police (DSP), has been nabbed by the Delta State police command.
The suspect, Ugwu (other names withheld) was apprehended by the
detectives from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) unit of the
command following a tip-off.
According to investigation, the suspected fake DSP had been extorting money from the public and policemen.
The burble, however, burst for Ugwu while allegedly trying to extort more money from officers over missing two AK 47 riffles.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr Baba Alkali, told Crime Watch Today that the suspect had deceived many police officers claiming he was serving as DSP attached to the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
He said the fake police officer, obtained a huge amount of money from the Area Commander when two AK 47 rifles got missing .
He was said to have deceived a police officer by collecting his AK47
rifle and snapped it and sent the picture to the police claiming that
was the picture of the rifle that got lost and which he could help them
recover.
CP Alkali said Ugwu collected a lot of money from some people on
the pretence that he would assist them for recruitment as police
cadet.
CP Alkali explained that Ugwu had attempted to join the force in 2002 when he went to the Police College, Lagos .
“Though it was October 2002 that he was admitted, he left the training college when he was screened out because of old age.
He said in 2007, when the police did another recruitment for
specialized people at Delta State Police Command he was enlisted as a
Constable and went to the same police training college, Ikeja Lagos.
According to him, it was during the screening that he was dropped because of old age.
He explained that since then he has been going to Police Divisions, impersonating as DSP and extorting money from the public.
CP Alkali stated that the suspect is in police custody, State
Criminal Investigations Department, (SCID) Asaba where he has
confessed his dubious acts.
Ugwu told Crime Watch Today that, “I am a fake DSP and I have been going round impersonating as a police officer with the rank of DSP.
I sent some fake pictures to the police officers because they
promised us some money . When we took them to the scene, we found
out that the police has suspected us and they chased us and I was
arrested ,” he said.
“ I used to call some police officers and would tell them to release
their suspects to me pretending to be working at Police Force
Headquarters Abuja and I would be threatening them with dismissal if
they failed to comply with my order”, he said.
CP Alkali said that the suspect would soon be charged to court.
