The campaign rally of Rivers State APC
candidate, Dakuku Peterside, scheduled to take place yesterday in
Okrika could not hold as a result of the presence of first lady, Dame
Patience Jonathan.
Mrs Jonathan who hails from Okrika, flew
into the town yesterday. It was the third time the rally would be
suspended. The first was slated for January but it was aborted when
thugs invaded the venue and destroyed canopies and gadgets meant for the
rally.
The chairman of Dakuku Peterside campaign organisation in Okrika, Tamuno Williams, said in Port Harcourt yesterday that the police advised them to put off the rally indefinitely because they could not guarantee security at the venue.
“Elections in Okrika in 2007 and 2011 were very peaceful but since Amaechi defected to APC, the party’s supporters have been visited with violence. You would recall that the party campaign office in Okrika was attacked. If the police can provide security in a volatile area like Obio Akpor why is it difficult to do same in Okrika.”
He urged President Jonathan to call his wife to order and ensure that lives and property are protected in Nigeria. A security source told our reporter that the police commissioner convened a meeting with stakeholders in the area on how to maintain peace and denied the allegation that the police refused to provide security for APC rallies.
